When I started my search, after restructuring eliminated my role, I had 4 goals for my new job: compensation equal to or better than what I had, global role, director title and to work for high tech company or partner headquartered near where I live. It had been my experience that most people end up in a better place than they started when going through a transition like I experienced. It was this hope that helped with the frustration of prospective managers who didn’t return my emails, great interviews that went nowhere and wondering if my job search was ever going to end. I read through the brochure late last night and it is amazing how common sense the approach is but I suspect that almost no one on their own can do this. I didn’t read one thing that I didn’t already know but the thing that hit home to me was the fact that trying to do this alone even in the best of circumstances doesn’t provide you with the sounding board and support structure to put all of the pieces together in a cohesive plan. In addition I suspect that there are techniques that even the most prepared job seeker would not think of individually…

I knew deep down that [the MDL Process] would work but it would require work and a considerable investment in time and money. I decided to delay and go about finding a job the traditional way, submitting resumes and never hearing back from hiring managers. Not surprisingly, after 6 months of trying it my way, I came back to MDL and dove in with both feet choosing to trust the team at MDL Partners. I attended my first networking session and found that it was a room of brilliant and motivated men and women who wanted the same thing that I did. You might recall that I asked you about contacts at [Company ABC] a few weeks ago, and you polled the network for me. DF responded. When we talked, we agreed that the job I was looking at with [Company ABC] was too low for me, but that a better match might be for me to teach courses for his current company, where he is now is Chief Administrative Officer. He forwarded my resume to the right people inside the company, I had an in- person interview, and I’m going to start teaching analytics courses for them. I wasn’t aware that his company even existed, so never would have gotten this work without the MDL network. So thanks a bunch!”

I attended the company Networking events on a regular basis…without these networking meetings, this may have never happened this way. I worked with MDL Partners to refine my resume into a current and appealing style. Networking is essential, and the MDL networking meetings are very helpful and regular meetings at MDL were a helpful “grounding” session for me to keep me going. As everyone out there knows, you have to put in the time in the job search and make that your current job.
